A warm mug of tea is one of the closest things a woman can get to real-world magic. Nothing else comes close when the nerves need calmed and the mood needs uplifted – and there’s actual science behind it!
In an article by Nature Magazine, psychopharmacologist Andrew Scholeys points out that the effect of tea is slightly paradoxical.
“Tea is calming, but alerting at the same time,” he says.
Countless other studies also show that tea helps reduce levels of cortisol (the stress hormone), improve focus, and enhance resilience to depression and dementia, while also helping women with issues like cramps and morning sickness.
While this may be news in the West, Eastern medicine like Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine have used teas for over 5,000 years as an indispensable tool for women’s (and men’s) wellness.
In celebration of International Women’s Day, here are the top five Ayurvedic teas that are particularly potent for women:
This tea goes back to the roots of Ayurveda – and every sip leaves you with a deep sense of rejuvenation. Tulsi, which is also known as ‘Holy Basil’ is considered a sacred herb in India, with its adaptogenic healing power. Plus, it’s abundant in antioxidants and helps with hormonal balance, which can help alleviate symptoms of PMS and menopause.
Kapha, in Ayurveda, is where the earth and water elements meet. To make a blend of Kapha tea, just add the following to water: 1 teaspoon of ginger, 1 clove, and a pinch of dill and fenugreek seed. Then boil, strain, and enjoy. This tea feels like a gentle boost of energy, and its spices help the free flow of oxygen to the brain, helping enhance circulation so you find yourself feeling those happy vibes all over. And it helps reduce bloating and lethargy, which can be both symptoms of PMS and Kapha imbalances.
Just smelling this fragrant tea makes you feel good. Peppermint tea is known to help with alertness and digestion, and its antispasmodic properties can also alleviate menstrual cramps. It is wonderful to sip this one after a long day, all cozy curled up on the couch in the evenings. Plus, it’s a wonderful tea for Vata and Pitta Doshas. Peppermint soothes the stomach muscles and improves the flow of bile which aids in healthy digestion, assimilation and absorption of nutrients, including fat. Both Doshas experience relief from gas thanks to peppermint’s carminative action.
This floral green tea goes back centuries, and it’s a pretty one. I love the way jasmine flowers open up in the tea. Jasmine offers a serene energy lift, as well as various benefits for the skin, immune system, and hormones. It’s also considered a Yin balancer when infused in tea, and can help restore balance to the Pitta Dosha.
Who doesn’t get lifted when drinking chai? Chai tastes like absolute heaven with darjeeling plus assam leaves, ginger, cardamom, mint, and lemongrass. Not only is it naturally caffeinated, but the spices just wake you up to get ready for the day. The stimulation and heat of chai is wonderful for the Kapha Dosha, and it’s also used to help improve circulation.
